Add colour, flavour, and nutrition to your vegetable garden with our Early Purple Broccoli Seeds, a classic variety celebrated for its vibrant purple heads and cold hardiness. Ideal for autumn sowing and early spring harvests, this versatile broccoli thrives in cooler climates, tolerating temperatures as low as -12°, and provides a welcome burst of fresh produce when other crops are scarce.
Purple sprouting broccoli is known for its great flavour and nutritional benefits with high levels of folic acid and vitamins A and C. Ideal for harvesting when its flower shoots are well developed, but before the flowers have opened.
Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.
SOW: Start seeds indoors in late summer (around July) so they’re ready for transplanting in early autumn.
SOW: In milder climates, you can also sow directly in early autumn.
HARVEST: Harvest the tender purple sprouts in early spring (typically March to April) when they’re at their best before they begin to toughen.
LIGHT: These plants thrive in full sun—choose a site that gets at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
WATERING: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly (about once a week under normal conditions), increasing the frequency during hot or dry spells, especially when the plants are establishing and during sprout formation.
SOIL: Plant in a rich, well-drained, loamy soil that’s been amended with plenty of organic matter (such as compost or well-rotted manure)
PLANT SIZE: Mature plants typically reach a height of around 60–90 cm, with the edible sprouts emerging along the stem.
TOP TIP: When harvesting Early Purple Broccoli, take the central spear first to encourage lots of side shoots to grow. Did you know, the heads of broccoli are typically the only parts of the vegetable that are utilised, but the stalks, buds and leaves are also edible?
DISH TO TRY: Have you tried Roasted Purple Sprouting Broccoli with Garlic, Lemon, and Parmesan – delicious!
