SOW: Start seeds indoors about 6–8 weeks before your intended transplant date. For a spring crop, sow in late winter (February–March) and transplant in early spring.
SOW: In milder or controlled conditions (like a greenhouse), you can sow continuously to enjoy a year-round harvest. For an autumn crop, sow in mid-summer (June) so plants can be established for early winter harvest.
HARVEST: Cauliflower typically matures 60–85 days after transplanting. For spring-sown transplants, expect harvest in late spring to early summer. For autumn transplants, harvest in winter when the heads are firm and well-formed.
LIGHT: Cauliflower grows best in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily). In warmer climates, a little afternoon shade can help prevent heat stress, but full sun is generally ideal.
WATERING: Keep the soil consistently moist for even growth. Water deeply once or twice a week, increasing the frequency during hot or dry spells. Aim for a steady, even moisture level—avoid waterlogging by ensuring good drainage.
SOIL: Plant in a rich, well-drained loamy soil enriched with plenty of organic matter (compost or well-rotted manure).
PLANT SIZE: Mature cauliflower heads are generally around 15–20 cm in diameter. The whole plant typically grows to about 60–70 cm tall, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
TOP TIP: Ensure cauliflowers are watered regularly and don’t allow them to dry out as it can impair their development.
DISH TO TRY: Classic Cauliflower Cheese – delicious!
