Add vibrant colour and delicious flavour to your garden with our Chantenay Carrot Seeds, a versatile and reliable heirloom variety. Known for its compact, cone-shaped roots and exceptional sweet, crisp taste, Chantenay carrots are ideal for home gardeners, even those with clay or shallow soil.
Chantenay carrots mature in 65-75 days and their uniform crops grow to around 10-12cm in length. Sow seeds in April – October and harvest from July – October. Their superior flavour makes them perfect for eating raw or cooked, they make a delicious addition to a Sunday roast when roasted with generous amounts of butter and honey.
Each packet contains approximately 400 seeds.
SOW: Directly sow the seeds into your garden once the soil is workable (typically March–April in cooler climates).
SOW: For a winter crop, you can sow in mid-summer (June–July) so that the carrots mature in cooler autumn conditions.
HARVEST: Chantenay carrots generally mature in about 70–90 days after sowing. Harvest when they reach their ideal size—usually in early summer (for spring sowing) or in autumn (for mid-summer sowing).
LIGHT: Carrots require full sun for optimal growth—choose a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
WATERING: Keep the soil consistently moist to encourage good germination and even root development. Water deeply about once or twice a week, increasing frequency during hot, dry spells. Avoid waterlogging; a steady, even moisture is key.
SOIL: Carrots thrive in loose, well-drained, sandy-loam or light loam soil free from stones and clumps. The soil should be well-tilled and enriched with organic matter (such as compost) but not overly rich in nitrogen, which can lead to forked or misshapen roots.
PLANT SIZE: Chantenay carrots are known for their conical, shorter shape. Mature carrots typically reach around 10–12 cm in length and develop a robust, well-formed root.
TOP TIP: When growing Chantenay carrots between April to July, keep your pots in a sunny spot and ensure the compost is always moist. For a continuous supply of carrots, sow a few seeds every fortnight between April to October.
DISH TO TRY: Honey Glazed Chantenay Carrots with Thyme – delicious!
