Elevate your gardening and culinary experience with our Chive Seeds, perfect for home gardeners, urban planters, and professional chefs. These hardy, fast-growing seeds produce lush green chive plants that add a mild onion flavour to your favourite dishes, from soups and salads to omelettes and garnishes.
Ideal for indoor pots, gardens and vertical planters, chives are easy herbs to grow and require very little maintenance. They are also great for attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies to your garden or allotment. Sow in March and April, and harvest from May to September.
Each packet contains approximately 75 seeds.
SOW: Chives are best sown directly into the garden or a seed tray as soon as the soil is workable in early spring (or in the fall for overwintering in mild climates).
SOW: Alternatively, start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost and transplant outdoors when the weather warms.
HARVEST: Chives typically germinate within 10–14 days, and you can begin harvesting once the leaves reach about 15 cm (6 inches) tall—usually around 60 days after sowing. They are a perennial herb, so you can snip the leaves repeatedly throughout the growing season without harming the plant.
LIGHT: Chives thrive best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. They also tolerate light partial shade, making them versatile for various garden spots.
WATERING: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water about once a week during dry spells; in cooler, wetter conditions, check the soil regularly and water as needed to maintain steady moisture.
SOIL: Chives prefer a well-draining, moderately fertile, loamy or sandy-loam soil.
PLANT SIZE: Mature chive clumps typically reach a height of about 30–45 cm (12–18 inches).
The slender, tubular leaves will form neat clumps that can be harvested continuously.
TOP TIP: Chives are at their best quality in the morning when the leaves are lush and juicy. The more often they are harvested, the more leaves they will produce.
DISH TO TRY: Chive Butter – delicious!
