Bring the sunshine of summer to your garden with our F1 Golden Hind Sweetcorn Seeds. This premium hybrid variety produces uniform cobs filled with plump, golden-yellow kernels renowned for their exceptional sweetness and juicy crunch. Perfect for boiling, grilling, cooking on the BBQ or enjoying fresh off the cob, F1 Golden Hind is an easy-to-grow crop that delivers a reliable and abundant harvest.
Sweetcorn can be sown in small pots or plug trays during late spring and the planted out into rich, fertile soil when the last frost has cleared. Sow from April to early May, harvest from July to August.
SOW: In cooler regions, you can start the seeds indoors about 3–4 weeks before transplanting, typically in early April. For most gardeners, sow the seeds directly into the garden once the soil has warmed up—usually in late April to early May, after the danger of frost has passed.
HARVEST: Sweetcorn is ready to harvest when the kernels are tender and milky. This usually occurs about 80–100 days after sowing, so if sown in May, expect a harvest from mid-summer (around July to August). The silks should dry and turn brown when the ears are ready.
LIGHT: Sweetcorn thrives in full sun. Ensure your plants receive at least 8 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal growth and ear development.
WATERING: Sweetcorn needs plenty of water, especially during tasseling and ear formation. Water deeply once or twice a week, adjusting for weather conditions. In hot, dry periods, you may need to water more frequently. Good drainage is essential to prevent waterlogging.
SOIL: Use a fertile, well-draining loamy or sandy-loam soil enriched with organic matter (such as compost or well-rotted manure).
PLANT SIZE: Mature F1 Golden Hind sweetcorn plants are robust and tall, generally reaching around 2 to 2.5 meters (6.5–8 feet) in height. They develop strong, thick stalks with well-formed ears that are usually about 20–25 cm long.
TOP TIP: Sweetcorn is wind pollinated, so is best to sow in blocks rather than rows. For the sweetest taste, eat your corn as soon as possible after harvesting.
DISH TO TRY: Grilled Sweetcorn on the Cob with Chilli-Lime Butter – delicious!
