Golden Acre cabbages are often amongst the first cabbages to be harvested during the Spring, with their cold hardiness they thrive in cooler temperatures. Renowned for their compact size, the variety produces smooth cabbage heads that are firm, crunchy and crisp, and are great for planting in smaller gardening spaces. Crops produce cabbages ranging from 1-2kg in weight, and are usually ready for harvest within 60-65 days, allowing for multiple planting cycles in one season.

With their strong resistance to common pests and diseases, Golden Acre cabbages are suited to both beginner and experienced gardeners alike. This variety requires rich soil, ample sunlight and consistent moisture throughout the growing season.

Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.

SOW: Start your seeds indoors about 6–8 weeks before you plan to transplant. For a winter crop, sow in midsummer (around JuneJuly) so you can transplant in early autumn (AugustSeptember).

SOW: Alternatively, if you prefer a spring crop, you can sow directly in late winter (February–March) to transplant outdoors when the soil warms.

HARVEST: When sown in mid-summer and transplanted in early autumn, mature heads will typically be ready for harvest between December and February.

HARVEST: If sown for a spring harvest, expect maturity around April to May.

LIGHT: Cabbage grows best in full sun—aim for at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure robust head formation and optimal flavour.

WATERING: Keep the soil consistently moist with deep, regular watering. Typically, watering once or twice a week is sufficient, with additional watering during dry spells. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring good drainage.

SOIL: Plant in a rich, well-drained, loamy soil that’s been amended with plenty of organic matter (such as compost or well-rotted manure).

PLANT SIZE: Mature Golden Acre cabbage heads generally weigh between 1–2kg. The overall plant, including its rosette of leaves, will typically reach about 30–45cm in height.

TOP TIP: Golden Acre cabbage is firm, crunchy and crisp, so we recommend whipping up a delicious coleslaw or stir fry to make the best use of your harvest!

DISH TO TRY: Braised Green Cabbage with Apples and Bacon – delicious!
