Courgettes are highly productive plants that take up lots of space in the garden or allotment, just two or three plants will be enough to feed the family and provide delicious crops to friends, too. Sow during April or May or wait to plant outside in late May to early June. Water plants regularly to keep the soil moist, and harvest courgettes when they are around 15-20cm in length.
Each packet contains approximately 10 seeds.
SOW: Sow seeds indoors about 3–4 weeks before the last frost (typically in early to mid‑March in temperate regions) if you plan to transplant.
SOW: Alternatively, you can sow them directly outdoors in late April to early May once the soil has warmed up.
HARVEST: Courgettes: Harvest the young, tender fruits when they’re about 15–20 cm long—usually from early summer (June) through to early autumn. Marrows: If you allow them to mature further, larger marrow-type fruits may develop, but they’re best picked when still tender for culinary use. If you want a larger marrow for stuffing, be aware that as they mature, they can become tougher and more fibrous.
LIGHT: These plants require full sun—aim for at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day for robust growth and abundant fruiting.
WATERING: Water deeply to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and fruit set. Generally, water about once or twice a week, increasing frequency during hot, dry spells. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
SOIL: Plant in a fertile, well-draining loamy or sandy-loam soil enriched with plenty of organic matter (compost or well-rotted manure).
PLANT SIZE: Bush varieties tend to be compact, typically growing about 60–90 cm tall with a similar spread. Harvest courgettes when they are around 15–20 cm long for the best texture and flavour.
TOP TIP: Courgettes are great companion plants to grow alongside other plants such as beans and sweetcorn. Simply plant a raised bed up with tall, slow-growing sweetcorn plants, and then fill the gaps with low-growing courgettes for two crops in the same bed. Did you know that most varieties listed as courgettes are also able to produce marrows? Simply leave plants unharvested for longer and the fruits will swell to marrow size.
DISH TO TRY: Courgette Fritters with Lemon Garlic Yogurt Sauce – delicious!
