Bring the garden-to-table experience to life with our Green Sprouting Calabrese Seeds, a classic Italian broccoli variety beloved for its rich flavour and prolific harvest. Ideal for gardeners of all skill levels, this heirloom favourite offers a continuous yield of tender, nutrient-packed florets that are perfect for steaming, stir-frying, or eating fresh.

Once sown, Calabrese produces one large head, but smaller heads develop after the central head is cut. Crops are ready to harvest in as little as 60-90 days.

Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.

SOW: Start seeds indoors about 6–8 weeks before transplanting (typically in mid-summer, e.g. July), then transplant outdoors in early autumn (August–September).

SOW: Alternatively, sow seeds in late winter (around February) so you can transplant them into the garden in early spring.

HARVEST: If grown as a winter crop, you can begin harvesting the tender sprouting heads from late winter into early spring (around January to March).

HARVEST: With a spring crop, expect to start harvesting approximately 3–4 months after transplanting (late spring to early summer).

LIGHT: Green Sprouting Calabrese thrives in full sun. Choose a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily to promote vigorous growth and optimal head formation.

WATERING: Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season. Water deeply about once or twice a week, adjusting for rainfall and local conditions. Consistent moisture is crucial, especially during the establishment phase and as the sprouts begin to form.

SOIL: Use a rich, well-drained loamy soil enriched with organic matter (compost or well-rotted manure)

PLANT SIZE: Mature plants generally reach a height of 60–90cm. As a sprouting variety, you’ll harvest multiple, tender heads (or side shoots) rather than a single large central head.

TOP TIP: Calabrese need plenty of soil when planting, ensure a deep drill of 2.5cm depth to give the seedling a good anchorage for growth. Wider spacing and lower crop density gives a longer period of harvesting.

DISH TO TRY: Roasted Calabrese Broccoli with Garlic, Chili, and Lemon – delicious!
