Grow a garden bursting with flavour and colour with Red Karmen Bulbing Onion Seeds. These premium seeds, sometimes known as ‘Spanish onions’ or ‘Salad onions’, produce medium-sized, deep crimson onions that are both visually striking and delicious. With a sweet, mild flavour and a hint of tang, Red Karmen onions are ideal for fresh salads, cooking, and pickling. This versatile variety is easy to grow, cold-tolerant, and stores exceptionally well for extended enjoyment.
Karmen Red onions like to be grown in a sheltered, sunny spot with well-drained soil. Onions are best sown from April onwards as they prefer the longer days, harvest from July onwards.
SOW: Start the seeds indoors about 10–12 weeks before your last expected frost (typically in late winter, around February–March in temperate regions).
SOW: Alternatively, if your climate allows, you can sow them directly into the garden as soon as the soil is workable in early spring.
HARVEST: Onions are ready to harvest when the tops begin to yellow and fall over, usually about 90–120 days after transplanting (or sowing). For Karmen Red Bulbing Onions, expect a harvest in mid to late summer.
LIGHT: Onions require full sun, aim for at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day to ensure healthy growth and proper bulb development.
WATERING: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the bulb formation stage. Water deeply once or twice a week, increasing the frequency during very hot or dry periods, but avoid overwatering to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
SOIL: Plant in a well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Ensure the soil is loose and well-tilled so that bulbs can develop without obstruction.
PLANT SIZE: Mature Karmen Red Bulbing Onions typically develop into medium to large bulbs often around 5–8 cm in diameter—with a robust flavour and a vibrant red skin.
TOP TIP: Soak your onion sets before planting to encourage quicker and more successful germination.
DISH TO TRY: Caramelized Red Onion Tart – delicious!
