Grow your own versatile and delicious root vegetable with our Best of All Swede Seeds. This classic variety of swede lives up to its name by delivering purple top crops with smooth, round roots with golden-yellow flesh and a sweet, mild flavour. Perfect for roasting, mashing, soups, and stews in the colder months, Best of All swedes are a favourite among gardeners for their high yields, long storage life, and excellent cold tolerance.
Swedes are best sown directly outdoors. Once fully grown, Swede can be happily left in the soil for a few months rather than harvested all at once.
SOW: Plant the seeds directly into the garden once the soil is workable in early spring (typically March–April) for a spring crop.
SOW: In milder areas, you can also sow in mid-summer (June–July) for a late autumn or winter harvest.
HARVEST: Swedes generally take about 90–120 days to mature. Harvest them when the bulbs are well developed—usually in late autumn or early winter—before the outer skin becomes overly tough.
LIGHT: Swedes thrive in full sun, ensure they receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for robust growth.
WATERING: Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season. Water deeply about once or twice a week, increasing frequency during hot, dry spells, while avoiding waterlogging.
SOIL: Use a rich, well-draining sandy-loam or loamy soil amended with plenty of organic matter (such as compost or well-rotted manure).
PLANT SIZE: Mature swedes typically form large, round to slightly oval bulbs that can reach around 10–15 cm in diameter (sometimes larger, depending on growing conditions).
TOP TIP: Lift Swede before the onset of extreme cold weather and place in a dry shed to store. For bigger yields, peel, prep and blanch Swede for 3 minutes and freeze for use later in the year.
DISH TO TRY: Creamy Swede Mash – delicious!
